Yu Guoming, distinguished professor in the Ministry of Education’s Changjiang Scholars Program and director of the Communication Innovation and Future Media Experimental Platform at Beijing Normal University
Shenzhen should offer new approaches to global communication in theAIera
Li Ping, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily
Shenzhen should use its hosting of the 33rdAPECEconomic Leaders’Meeting to strengthen its international communication, find new ways to tell the story of Chinese modernization and contribute to the intelligent communication revolution across the Asia-Pacific, communication scholar Yu Guoming said.
Yu is a distinguished professor in the Ministry of Education’s Changjiang Scholars Program and director of the Communication Innovation and Future Media Experimental Platform at Beijing Normal University.
Shenzhen’s role as China’s third host city for theAPECsummit reflects three strengths: its regional and global connections, its compelling development story and its technological base, Yu said.
The city is a key part of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao innovation corridor, an important node in the Belt and Road Initiative and a hub for the Asia-Pacific digital economy. Its ties across markets, cultures and different systems make it a natural setting for international dialogue, he said.
HostingAPECmeans more than providing conference facilities. A host city must also offer a glimpse of the future, Yu said. Shenzhen’s transformation from a border town into an international metropolis gives it a distinctive story to tell.
The world is entering an era of “deep mediatization,” in which digital platforms and technologies, including generativeAI, are reshaping communication, Yu said. Shenzhen’s strengths in 5G-Advanced networks and computing infrastructure give it a foundation for experimenting with new forms of international communication.
The summit could bring Shenzhen three main benefits: stronger regional links among capital, talent and industries; a chance to showcase China’s openness and innovation; and greater international attention, which could help the city become a more prominent platform for global dialogue.
“Shenzhen has completed the first half of ‘being seen’ and is entering the second half of ‘being told’ and ‘being understood,’” Yu said. He hopes the meeting will help Shenzhen, Guangdong Province and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area communicate more effectively with international audiences.
The city’s transport links and economic connections provide a strong foundation. Its ports, railways and international air routes connect it to global supply chains, while multinational companies, research institutions, international residents and a multilingual cultural scene create opportunities for cross-cultural exchange, Yu said.
Shenzhen’s open, innovative character and the idea that “once you come to Shenzhen, you’re one of us” are part of its appeal, Yu said. But the city still needs to turn its development achievements into stories that international audiences can understand and relate to, and to deepen research into how cities communicate globally.
Yu urged Shenzhen to move beyond one-way messaging and focus on building relationships. Rather than simply reporting what has happened, the city should explain why its experience may matter to others, he said.
He also called for a stronger system to make city data accessible to international media, present stories in engaging formats and build recognizable cultural symbols. Shenzhen’s image, he said, should bring together technology, culture and the environment, showing the city as not only capable but also approachable and trustworthy.
Shenzhen could contribute to communication across the Asia-Pacific by sharing its experience in technology and governance, Yu said. He proposed working with regional partners such as Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo to develop common standards for evaluatingAI-generated content, and considering initiatives such as a youth dialogue on technology and culture.
He also recommended shifting from showcasing achievements to explaining how they were made, and from government-led messaging to stories told by communities and individuals. Residents, he said, can be among a city’s most credible storytellers.
The broader goal is to make Chinese experience understandable and relevant to people elsewhere while creating more opportunities for genuine exchange, Yu said.
“Intelligent communication is a historic opportunity to reshape the relationship between people and the world,” he said. He hopes Shenzhen will draw on its strengths to develop new approaches to human-AIcollaboration and contribute ideas to international communication.

ICBC‘Global Trading’services help Shenzhen firms manage currency risks overseas
As Shenzhen firms expand overseas, exchange-rate swings can erode profits and disrupt cash flow, making currency-risk management essential.
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC)’s “Global Trading” services help companies manage that risk. The services operate around the clock, support settlement and currency exchange in 50 currencies, and offer trading in over 90. Tools include spot transactions, forwards, swaps and options.
For companies that make and receive payments in different currencies, ICBC Shenzhen Branch combines these tools to help stabilize exchange costs and arranges bond financing to provide yuan funding.
Shenzhen firms operating in Europe, theU.S. and Southeast Asia may have limited payment options in less widely traded currencies. Drawing on ICBC’s overseas network, the branch offers non-deliverable forwards—cash-settled contracts that do not involve delivery of the currency—and swaps to help manage currency risks in emerging markets.
ICBC’s Chat Dealing tool provides real-time quotes in multiple currencies through a chat interface. The system automates 96% of trades, reducing the need to request quotes from dealers one by one.
ICBC Shenzhen Branch’s financial-market trading volume exceeded US$100 billion in 2025 and served more than 10,000 firms expanding overseas. Its “Global Trading” services help these businesses manage currency risks in global markets.
